We Further Resolve to develop and work to implement strategies that dismantle racism through our adult religious education, children\u2019s religious education, Sunday services, and community outreach and action.<\/p>\n<p><em>Adopted May 5, 2002<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>\n<strong> Resolution on the &#8220;Eighth Principle&#8221;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Background:<\/span><br \/>\nA grass roots movement within the Unitarian Universalist Association is<br \/>\nproposing an 8th principle be added to the seven that were adopted in 1985.<br \/>\nThat proposal is: \u201cWe, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist<br \/>\nAssociation, covenant to affirm and promote journeying toward spiritual<br \/>\nwholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our<br \/>\nactions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves<br \/>\nand our institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our congregation has created a series of opportunities this year to discuss the<br \/>\nproposal. It was clear there is strong support for the spirit and intent of the<br \/>\nproposal. Individual UU congregations are adopting the proposal as written or<br \/>\nproposals of their own design that fulfill that spirit and intent.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Resolution:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>WHEREAS racism and its effects, including the deep divisions in our world<br \/>\ncaused by inequitable and unjust distribution of power and resources, are<br \/>\nembedded in all social institutions as well as in ourselves and will not be<br \/>\neradicated without deliberate engagement in analysis and action and undertaking<br \/>\npersonal and institutional commitments to end racism, and<\/p>\n<p>WHEREAS the Unitarian society of Ridgewood has a long history of working<br \/>\ntoward and supporting anti-racism and racial justice,<\/p>\n<p>THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that we carefully examine our own conscious<br \/>\nand unconscious racism, and the effect that racism has on all our lives,<br \/>\nregardless of our color.
