The Unitarian Society of Ridgewood’s mission states:
Growing in mind and spirit,
We act together as a beacon for justice and love:
Transforming self and world.
From the time of our founding in 1896 to the present, social action has been one of the cornerstones of our congregational life and now, as then, we strive to fulfill our mission to “act…as a beacon for justice….transforming self and world.”
Our Social Justice team reaches beyond the walls of USR to work for and advocate for social justice causes, to strengthen relationships with other religious and justice organizations, and to connect to the larger world of Unitarian Universalism.
Here at USR our services are imbued with purpose as well as spirituality. Currently our justice work revolves around four major areas, Racial Justice, Reproductive Justice, Environmental Justice and Immigration Action. Other smaller groups of interest do work on food insecurity, housing, LGBTQ rights, and other topics as they arise. Our groups, interests and actions overlap and we partner together to advocate, agitate and educate. We join with our Religious Education program to support children, youth and adults in exploring social justice issues.
We also align and support other organizations that strive for justice like UUFaith Action NJ, our legislative lobbying arm and UUSC, which works for disaster relief here at home and abroad.
On Sundays you will find a Social Justice table set up in the coffee hour. The table provides information on current projects and other social justice causes and aligned organizations. There’s always something of interest so please stop by, meet us and start a conversation.
Join us, explore our Team pages, reach out! We welcome you and whatever time, energy and gifts you may bring!
